A city-wide movement where schools become centres of environmental learning, innovation and action.
Introduction
Education is the foundation for building environmentally responsible societies. However, while sustainability is increasingly recognised as a global priority, meaningful engagement with nature remains limited in many schools. Students require opportunities to experience nature, understand ecosystems, and develop the skills needed to address future environmental challenges.
The Green Schools Bengaluru Conclave 2026 is a flagship initiative designed to transform the way schools engage with sustainability by integrating nature-based education, experiential learning, green campus development, environmental research and community participation into mainstream education.
The conclave will bring together over 500 school principals, vice-principals, teachers, education leaders, environmental experts and sustainability practitioners from Bengaluru on 05 August 2026. More importantly, it will launch the Green Schools Bengaluru Network, a year-long collaborative programme that will directly impact more than 300,000 students across Bengaluru.
The initiative
What the initiative asks of schools
The Green Schools Bengaluru Initiative encourages every participating school to take six practical steps.
Promote outdoor learning
Make outdoor and experiential learning a regular part of the year.
Develop green campuses
Build green and climate-resilient school campuses.
Encourage student research
Support student-led environmental research and enquiry.
Strengthen community participation
Involve parents, neighbourhoods and local bodies in the work.
Build partnerships
Form partnerships for sustainability across schools and institutions.

Why this initiative

Most children spend very little time interacting with natural ecosystems, despite mounting environmental pressure on the city they will inherit:

Schools therefore have an unprecedented opportunity to become catalysts for environmental transformation. The initiative seeks to bridge this gap by making nature an integral part of education rather than an occasional activity.

Objectives
What the conclave sets out to do
Foster collaboration
Bring together policymakers, education leaders, environmental experts, sustainability practitioners and school leaders to exchange ideas and successful practices.
Promote nature-based education
Encourage schools to integrate outdoor learning, experiential education, green campus initiatives, environmental research and community participation.
Launch the Network
Create a collaborative digital platform for school networking, mentorship, knowledge sharing, innovation and joint environmental initiatives.
Flagship initiative
50 kilometres for a greener Bengaluru
"My School, My Green Neighbourhood"
As an outcome of the conclave, participating schools will be encouraged to voluntarily adopt and maintain a 100-metre stretch around their campuses through cleanliness drives, tree planting, biodiversity enhancement and community engagement.
With 500 participating schools, the initiative could create up to 50 kilometres of greener neighbourhoods across Bengaluru, while fostering long-term environmental stewardship among students and local communities.
