Brief Description of Activities
1. Introduction
The “Green School Premises” initiative, led by Sujatha U. Nair, PGT Biology, transforms the campus into a living laboratory of ecology through biodiversity, education, community outreach, awareness, plantation, and waste management.
2. Objectives
To conserve biodiversity, use the campus as an outdoor classroom, involve the community, build sustainability awareness, expand green cover, manage waste efficiently, and establish a model green campus.
3. Maintaining Biodiversity
A herbal garden, butterfly garden, bird feeders, nest boxes, and preserved habitat trees have boosted bird, butterfly, and insect activity on campus.
4. Nature-Based Education
Outdoor classes, nature walks, soil and pollination sessions, journaling, Eco Club quizzes, and environmental-day celebrations deepen students' ecological understanding.
5. Community-Based Conservation
Joint plantation and clean-up drives, collaboration with the Forest Department and Municipal Corporation, alumni sponsorship, and awareness rallies extend conservation beyond the school gates.
6. Sustainability Awareness
Workshops on climate change, the 3 R's, “switch off” reminders, anti-plastic campaigns, and SDG integration embed sustainable habits into daily school life.
7. Tree Plantation and Conservation
Annual monsoon plantation of native species, sapling adoption, tree guards, and monitoring have improved survival rates and created green corridors.
8. Waste Management
Source segregation, composting, recycler partnerships, and a “Waste Warriors” team have cut landfill volumes.
9. Additional Green Campus Initiatives
Rainwater harvesting, rooftop solar panels, an organic kitchen garden, eco-brick upcycling, an annual Green Audit, “Walk-to-School” days, a sapling nursery, paperless administration, and LED lighting drive measurable resource efficiency.
10. Recognition and Achievements
Documenting the impact of sustained leadership in environmental education.
The initiative, conceptualised and personally led by Sujatha U. Nair, PGT Biology, reflects sustained, hands-on commitment to environmental education well beyond regular curricular duties. Key markers of this leadership include:
• Conceptualisation, coordination, and year-on-year expansion of all six original pillars plus the additional initiatives above, without external consultancy.
• Mentorship of the Eco Club and training of student “Green Monitors” and “Waste Warriors” who now sustain many activities independently.
• Consistent documentation of activities through photographs, audits, and student project records, forming a verifiable evidence trail of impact over multiple years.
• Successful integration of the initiative with classroom Biology and Environmental Studies curricula, ensuring academic as well as ecological value.
• Demonstrated ability to mobilise parents, alumni, and government departments, extending the school's environmental influence into the wider community.
11. Outcomes and Impact
Cumulative recognition through State-level Swachh Harit Vidyalaya Puraskar (2021), 5-Star SHVR Rating (2025), 5-year consecutive Green Certificate, and the Sterling Award for Green School (2025) validates sustained, high-impact outcomes. Taken together, this sustained body of work is submitted in support of recognising Sujatha U. Nair, PGT Biology, for the “Best Green Teacher” award, in acknowledgement of her role in transforming Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2, Mangaluru into a model green campus.
12. Conclusion
Through biodiversity maintenance, education, community participation, awareness, plantation, waste management, and resource-efficiency initiatives, the school has made meaningful strides towards a genuinely green campus, reflecting Sujatha U. Nair's sustained commitment as a candidate for the “Best Green Teacher” award.
